The United Nations affirmed this past September that chronic non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes are of greater health concern than infectious diseases. The UN’s announcement specifically addresses the dangers of tobacco products, alcohol and poor diet as risk factors for non-communicable disease. Alcohol and tobacco products are currently regulated by governments to protect public health; will they intervene with food as well? It is argued that fructose, fruit sugar, exerts similar toxic effects on the liver as alcohol, which is a byproduct of the fermentation of sugar. There have been studies that show that the excess consumption of sugar can lead to cancer and cognitive decline.

Some countries are already taking steps to regulate the consumption of foods that are harmful to our bodies. In 2011 Denmark began taxing foods high in saturated fats, and now they consider taxing sugar as a means to reduce obesity and increase the overall health of their population.

Sugar affects the brain similarly to the addictive properties of tobacco and alcohol, it’s properties encourage the brain to crave additional intake. It also affects certain hormones that control hunger and can lead to over eating. Excess consumption of fructose can lead to the same health problems as alcohol consumption: hypertension, insulin resistance, dyslipidaemia, pancreatitis, obesity, malnutrition, hepatic dysfunction and habituation. A little sugar is not the problem, but The United Nations is rightfully concerned with the dangers of excess sugar consumption as it has tripled worldwide over the last 50 years. Today, people are consuming an average of 500 calories per day just from added sugar! Countries that have adopted the low-cost, high processed diet common in Western cultures have seen the consequences with rising obesity and obesity related disease rates; there are 30% more obese people in the world today than the number of undernourished people. When this excess sugar consumption is combined with the natural degradation of our bodies due to the aging process, damage is caused to our lipids, proteins and DNA furthering the risk of developing disease.

Obesity is not the cause of disease, normal weight individuals are also affected, but obesity is a risk factor for diseases that constitute metabolic syndrome; diabetes, hypertension, lipid problems, cardiovascular disease and fatty liver disease. There are long-term economic and health-care costs associated with metabolic syndrome; in the United States $65 billion is cost in lost productivity and $150 billion is spent on health care resources from metabolic syndrome and its associated disease.

Sugar is natural, a nutrient and pleasure but too much of a good thing can be toxic. Both alcohol and tobacco are regulated from the supply side through taxation, age restrictions and distribution controls. These methods have been successful for reducing these substances’ abuse and related health concerns. Can this work for sugar? Currently, education based programs in schools have had little effect on limiting the consumption of sugars. Proposals are being made by different health organizations to tax certain foods that are highly processed or contain certain added sugars. Strategies to limit availability of the harmful foods are also being considered, such as regulating the hours of operation for retailers, implementing age restrictions for purchase and limiting the density of retail outlets that sell the products. There has also been a push to remove commercials from television for products with added sugars and replace them with healthy food promotions. Many schools have implemented their own policies for regulating sugar consumption; removing candy and soda from vending machines.

The US Food and Drug Administration has the power to start a healthy revolution, but it is also up to the food producers, manufacturers and distributors to limit the amount of added sugar in foods. However, your health should be one on your highest priorities. Be conscious of your eating habits and food choices, educate yourself on the dangers on excess sugar consumption and pass along the information.

Metabolic Syndrome affects 22% of the population and is associated with other disturbances of glucose and lipid metabolism, such as; Type 2 Diabetes, Vascular Inflammation, Arthrosclerosis as well as fatiguing illnesses that create excess oxidative stress. Oxidative damage results in a decrease in efficiency of the mitochondria’s ability to produce energy and the cell membranes ability to protect energy creation and transfer, causing fatigue, damaging our DNA and furthering the progress of degenerative diseases. Major risk factors of MS include; abdominal obesity, hyperglycemia, lipid dysfunction and high blood pressure. When insulin levels in your body are not sufficient to monitor glucose and amino acid concentration, insulin resistance occurs. Insulin resistance is the primary cause of MS and its associated diseases. The ability to metabolize fats is diminished if insulin levels are insufficient causing glycerol and free fatty acids can accumulate in tissues.

Mitochondrial dysfunction has been linked to insulin resistance, which results in a reduction of glucose utilization causing cell dysfunction. Cell dysfunction reduces electron transport chain activity and energy production and increases free radical levels resulting in further cell membrane damage and fatigue. When mitochondria function at optimal levels the amount of oxidative molecules produced as a by-product of energy production are neutralized by naturally occurring intracellular antioxidants. Unfortunately, in Metabolic Syndrome and Type 2 Diabetes, excess free radicals are produced in excess of antioxidants, and damage is caused to our cells and mitochondria by lipid peroxides produced when free radicals attack fatty acids. Fatty acids are especially susceptible to free radicals, those who are obese, insulin resistant and pre-diabetic have higher concentrations of fatty acids resulting in progressive damage to their cells even before they are diagnosed with a glucose related disease.

Fatigue is a common condition in those diagnosed with MS, Type 2 Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease and is related to the decreased efficiency of mitochondrial energy production caused by oxidative damage. Mitochondria can also be affected by disease, infection and the natural progression of aging that all create excess oxidative damage that exceed our body’s natural ability to neutralize. The degradation of cell and mitochondrial membranes causes premature aging that manifests physically as fatigue. Preventing damage to cellular and mitochondrial membranes is important to maintaining energy production, electron transport activity and energy transfer.

Arthrosclerosis is thought to begin with abnormalities in lipoprotein subclasses which are highly susceptible to oxidation, and involves chronic inflammatory damage to blood vessels due to lipid accumulation, inflammatory response, vessel cell death and thrombosis which can result in heart damage. Arthrosclerosis is the leading cause of Cardiovascular Disease and strokes; when oxidized lipoproteins interact with blood vessel walls plaques are created that when broken off occlude the blood vessels in the heart.

In MS associated diseases, supplementations has been used with antioxidants and vitamins such as; Vitamins C, E, A and CoQ10, to neutralize free radicals and inhibit the progression of the disease. However, antioxidants cannot repair the damage already done to our membrane lipids. Lipid Replacement Therapy can reverse oxidative damage done to our cells and mitochondria and can restore energy product, electron transport activity and energy transfer. Combining LRT with antioxidants repairs the damage done by excess free radicals, restores cell function and prevents further damage.

In clinical studies, LRT has been used in combination with the complete nutritional system in Propax with NT Factor that includes healthy lipids to repair cell and mitochondrial membranes, antioxidants to neutralize free radicals, healthy bacteria to create an optimal environment for the healthy lipids and restore healthy intestinal flora levels as well as other essential vitamins, minerals and omegas to support overall health. Propax with NT Factor has shown to reduce the fatigue, the physical side effect of cell degradation, by up to 40% in 8 weeks.

Nutritional Therapeutics products contain our powerful fatigue fighting formula, NT Factor. Fatigue can be a by-product of a variety of health issues, including; allergies, being overweight or obese and joint inflammation. When a part of your body, or a body system, is under stress the rest of your body is affected. NT Factor replaces damaged lipids in your cell membranes through Lipid Replacement Therapy, restoring optimal functionality to the cell.

Breathe Clear and Reducew Fatigue

When your Immune System is working overtime to initiate an allergic response to fight off the allergens attacking your system, you can become fatigued as a result. Your immune system is using its resources to fight the allergies, putting additional stress on the rest of the body’s cells. Allergens can also attack healthy cells and cause inflammation which can cause degradation of your cell membranes. Breathe Clear with NT Factor helps to build your body’s immune response to allergies, reduces inflammation and decreases your allergy related fatigue through Lipid Replacement Therapy.

Relief From Inflammation!

Joint pain is commonly caused by inflammation of your cells. Inflammation puts stress on your cells and can degrade them causing fatigue. Joint Health contains Glucosamine, MSM, Boswellia, Calcium, Phosphorus and Potassium to help repair your joints and bring fluidity to the affected area. Joint Health also contains NT Factor to repair cell membranes damaged by arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. NT Factor repairs the damaged cells through Lipid Replacement Therapy, the same way it would work to reduce fatigue.

Lose Weight and Reduce Fatigue!

Poor diet can damage healthy cells, degrading them and causing fatigue. Being fatigued can exacerbate a person’s struggle with weight; it is difficult to achieve a beneficial workout when one is constantly tired. Being overweight also puts additional stress on your body systems, further fatigue and the cycle of weight gain. Healthy Curb with NT Factor not only reduces your cravings for carbohydrates and curbs your appetite, but reduces fatigue as well.

NT Factor is a powerful food and food extract bases formula that contains glycophospholipids, healthy bacteria and growth media. NT Factor, through Lipid Replacement Therapy, replaces damaged lipids in the membranes of cells with healthy ones. Healthy lipids allow your cells to function at optimal levels to provide energy and support all body systems. Nutritional Therapeutics, Inc. includes NT Factor in every product we sell because we stand behind the science and the capabilities of the product.

One two-ounce Smart Youthful Energy Shot has been shown to reduce fatigue in as little as 15 minutes! Smart Youthful Energy contains our clinically proven fatigue reducing formula, NT Factor. The food and food extract based formula contains glycophospholipds that reduce fatigue by maintaining the health of your cells. Fatigue is caused when the lipids in cell membranes are damaged; when the cell can no longer operate at optimal levels, energy is lost causing fatigue. The NT Factor formula has been proven to reduce fatigue through Lipid Replacement Therapy, the damaged lipids in cell membranes are replaced with healthy lipids and optimal energy production is restored to the cell.

Smart Youthful Energy does not contain herbs or stimulants common in other energy shots that only temporarily treat the symptoms of fatigue. Smart Youthful Energy and the patented NT Factor blend effectively treat the cause of fatigue for sustained energy.

Smart Youthful Energy can be taken for an added boost during the day for those seeking additional energy for physical activity or for an especially busy day. Smart Youthful Energy studies were done using one two-ounce shot, however, studies have shown no negative side effects of the shot and additional dosages can be taken throughout the day.

The control of appetite and carbohydrates can be the key to any good weight management regimen. Healthy Curb® is the key. Healthy Curb® with NT Factor allows you to take control of your appetite, carbohydrate intake and absorption. Your body can work without the large cravings for carbohydrates most current diets inflict. Combined with NT Factor®, it also gives you the benefit of reducing fatigue, while increasing your cell membrane potential.

Obesity and overweight affect up to one billion people worldwide according to the World Health Organization. Of those people, most face the complications associated with being overweight. These complications include cardiovascular diseases, diabetes Metabolic Syndrome and a variety of other chronic illnesses and conditions.

Excess accumulation of body fat, a chronic imbalance between food consumption and energy expenditure, is reaching epidemic proportions. Strategies to lose body fat usually include a combination of limiting dietary caloric intake; increase in physical activity, behavioral therapy, drug therapy, and in extreme cases even surgery. Over the last several years, there has been an increase in the availability and popularity of weight loss dietary supplements. However, the jury is still out on the therapeutic effectiveness of many of them. Most are geared to the burning or blocking of fat cells. Most causes of obesity are not due to an over consumption of fat though. Rather the source is more often rapidly-absorbed carbohydrates.

NT Factor has over 15 years of proven research to show its overall effectiveness in aiding in the return of proper cell function through its Lipid Replacement Therapy. That combined with phaseolus vulgaris, the only FDA approved nutrient to specify weight loss, makes Healthy Curb® the key to your lifestyle change. Combined, these powerhouses give you appetite suppression and regulation of your carbohydrates. [...]

Are you feeling fatigued? Do everyday tasks require significant effort to compete?

You are not alone. Fatigue is a natural side effect of aging, many degenerative diseases and medical treatments. Fatigue can also be caused by environmental stresses. No matter the orientation of your fatigue, the source of it is the same. Fatigue is caused by the degradation of cell membranes due to oxidation and free radical damage. When the cell membrane is degraded, the cell is unable to function at optimal levels resulting in fatigue for the individual.

Lipid Replacement Therapy is the replacement of damaged lipids that make up the cell membrane with healthy, fully functional lipids. LRT, combined with antioxidants, has been proven to increase cellular function and reduce individual’s fatigue. NT Factor by Nutritional Therapeutics targets the source of fatigue at the cellular level without herbs, stimulants or chemicals. NT Factor is a proprietary formula that is comprised of phosphoglycolipids that can replace the damaged lipids of the cell membranes degraded by oxidation and free radicals.

Nutritional Therapeutics couples the unique powers of NTFactor with their superior multivitamin packet, Propax and Propax Gold. Both formulas supply a complete nutritional system that supports overall health and increases the benefits of NTFactor. PropaxGold has additional antioxidants, such as; resveratrol, coenzyme q10 and green tea that can further aid in the reduction of fatigue by eliminating free radicals and oxidative stresses in the body. Nutritional Therapeutics has effectively combated fatigue with their unique formulas by replacing the damaged lipids with healthy ones and then furthering the functional life span of the lipids by neutralizing the degenerative chain reaction free radicals can inflict on the cells. In recent surveys, results were felt in as little as three days, and fatigue was reduced by up to 40% after 60 days. The specific combination of Propax and NTFactor has also been tested in clinical trials and has proven to reduce the fatigue, and other symptoms, of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatments.

Don’t let fatigue take over your life; it can be combated without drug therapies. Join those who have already achieved relief from NTFactor and Propax. Nutritional Therapeutics unique and scientifically tested formulas offer long term and significant relief from fatigue, no matter the source.

As a health conscious person you try and do all the right things to insure your health. You watch what you eat, take your vitamins, and most of all, you exercise. But are you doing more damage to your body? Is what you’ve believed all these years wrong?

It has become almost common sense that exercise is good for you. Most people know it improves health and mental clarity, while it reduces weight and relaxes us. However, one thing it also does is damage body tissue. The key is to balance stress and health.

Vigorous exertion exercises cause a dramatic increase in reactive oxidative stress (free radical damage) to your body and skeletal muscle. What researchers have been discovering over many years is that any form of exercise will cause harm to the mitochondria of your cells. But, that damage increases with the amount of exercise you do. Exhaustive exercise, such as running, however, will cause a dramatic increase of the impact free radicals have on our cells (cell membrane damage). We have always known that stress causes damage. But now there is a way to reverse that damage.

However, NT Factor ® will increase your energy levels, and relieve the damage, now making it easier for you to find the get up and go to finding a healthier you. By replacing the damaged cell membranes with new healthy ones, NT Factor ® allows the cell to produce the proper levels of energy you need naturally. When your cells function at their maximum allowable levels it takes in all sources of energy and uses them. By doing this you feel an increased amount of energy. The energy you need to find your sneakers, and begin a little exercise.

Never think exercise is all bad. Research has also found that supplementing with antioxidants, such a Co-Q10, resveratrol, and others, can suppress the breakdown of mitochondria regardless of the amount, or level of training. Anti-oxidant’s can downgrade the progression of damage to a slower pace, suppressing the amount of cell membrane damage done. NTFactor, however, goes beyond mere antioxidants, but in a much more beneficial way. It does this by working directly on the cells to replace the damaged layer of cell membrane with new healthy ones. This inhibits further damage, and more refined layer of protection of the mitochondria on a continuous cycle.

The key is always going to be energy, and healthy cell life. A healthy cell produces energy at its peak level. This allows you to do the things you want to do. It also allows for all multitudes of other processes your body requires to remain healthy and vital. Begin living your active life today.

Among the known risk factors for Alzheimer’s are age and nutrition. Once you look beyond the genetic factors, age, nutrition, smoking, alcohol, head injury, and depression are the most related factors to the disease. However, number one on the list is aging. It is the strongest of all the risk factors.

How aging affects the disease has yet to be understood. What we at NTI can do is help slow down, and reverse the aging process by giving you our Lipid Replacement Therapy, in combination with good nutritional support. Allowing your cells to function at their peak levels, NT Factor®’s Lipid Replacement Therapy replaces damaged cell membranes with new healthy ones removing the damage caused by oxidative stress.

Good nutrition may be on of the keys to helping reduce your risk factors. Some researches believe that following a good regimen of nutrition in midlife can increases your cognitive function later in life, specifically your verbal skills. Verbal function is on e of the most vulnerable pieces of cognitive skills susceptible to aging. As a result, it can also be more of a victim to Alzheimer’s.

A large piece of evidence supports the fact that oxidative stress plays a role in Alzheimer Disease. This type of stress leads to an increase in homocysteine levels in the body. A recent study showed that an increase in intake of antioxidants helped lower the levels of homocyseine in the body of Alzheimer patients.

So what does all this mean for you? It means that your interest in good nutrition and good health may help you in the long-term fight against aging.

I’m a major advocate of Grapeseed Extract and Pycnogenol and have used both since 1995. My allergies/sinus/headache issues are just about history. I have a lot of info on these antioxidants and trust that they do slow down the aging process.

I was given the FM dx back in 1999 and another doc said she didn’t think I had it. I deal with a lot of OA issues. I have to believe that the Pycnogenol and GE could have slowed down the FM issues.

Can you speak on these?

Dr. Nicolson’s reply:

I am all for any supplements that offer patients real therapeutic benefits. Often herbal and nutraceutical supplements are overlooked in favor of pharmaceutical drugs, but we have found them in general to be very useful. You have mentioned two that are useful. I discussed in previous posts that there are some disadvantages with the nutraceuticals in terms of speed of response, efficacy of the nutracuetical, adverse reactions of some patients to certain nutraceuticals (this seems to be much less than pharmaceuticals but it can occur) and the fact that some responses are only temporary and require higher and higher doses to achieve the same effects. Even with these limitations, nutraceuticals are often a less expensive way to help in the recovery process, and they are certainly useful for anti-aging and to help in the prevention of various conditions.
